Capoeira
Hosted by Akil
Ridgewood
March 9th 3-5:30pm
Capoeira is an afro-diasporic artform that was created by enslaved Africans in Brazil. It is a form of cultural expression and resistance that blends elements of music, dance, martial arts, and Afro-Brazilian culture.
Shortly after slavery was abolished in Brazil, capoeira was outlawed in 1890, but would eventually be legalized in 1940. Today capoeira is taught across the world and can be seen in films like “Only the Strong” and “The Protector” as well as video games like the “Tekken” and "Street Fighter"series.
Akil "Gameleira" George has been practicing for almost 12 years and has been teaching for over 9 years. He has experience teaching kids, teens, and adults and has taught and taken workshops from teachers in NYC, Rochester, Boston, San Francisco, Atlanta, and Poland.
The workshop will focus on basic movements as well as introduce you to capoeira music and songs. Akil's approach to teaching is to meet students where they're at physically, no matter if they're a beginner or advanced.
